A New Editorial Policy
2 Apr, 2007 11:22 pm
Scitizen's editorial policy has changed: scientists fact check the news submissions, the editors select the opinions and may ask for reviews, readers moderate comments in response to articles. Discussions are open for one month.
The principal change concerns the opinion pieces:
In order to guarantee the diversity of opinions published on topics still subject to debate (and especially non-mainstream opinions) the opinion pieces are selected among the submissions by Scitizen’s editorial staff. Our editors are responsible for ensuring fair coverage.
If necessary, the editor sends a request to a selected number of reviewers in order to fact check the references listed in the piece. In which case, we ask the reviewers to be committed to respect the diversity of opinions.
In addition, we recall the 3 main policies of Scitizen:
- Articles must be understandable to broad non-expert audience. Overly technical articles will be rejected.
- Every scientific fact reported in a news or an opinion article should be backed by a reference (from the scientific peer reviewed literature). Technical debates shall not take place here.
- Discussion here is restricted to the description of science, its social and its political implications.
Please feel free to comment on this new editorial policy.
Lastly, the opinion pieces are more clearly indicated on the site (with [opinion] before the title). Also for clarification purposes, the comprehensive list of the reviewers was removed from the article pages. Instead, we will soon display the list of the reviewers who have fact checked the article.
